I was anxious about reading Hemingway for book club because I was so unsuccessful at it in high school, but his memoirs are a surprisingly easy read and even enjoyable. I still find Hemingway to be too sparse for me (I LIKE adjectives, sir), but it was interesting to read about the people he hung out with in the 20s, and to learn about living in Paris at that time.
I found this so hard to get through (boring). I guess it was published post humorously. Maybe for this reason? But I am sure others love it.
What I most enjoyed about this book were the insights into the formation of Hemingway’s writing style. I did also appreciate his remorse over the end of his first marriage. Too often we never hear about consequences for the actions of certain public figures.
I've come to appreciate Hemingway more as I've grown older but simply can't shake the feeling that he was probably kind of a jerk, which for me seeps into all of his work. If I am being honest this is really a 3-star, but is lifted to four because of moments of gleaming prose like this:
"With so many trees in the city, you would see the spring coming each day until a night of warm wind would bring it in suddenly one morning. Sometimes the cold rains would beat it back so that it would seem that it would never come and that you were losing a season out of your life."

Always mixed feelings when it comes to Hemingway lol but I did really enjoy aspects of this book. Something about his writing is so boring in the best way. Hits the spot when it’s what I’m looking for in a book. Also enjoyed reading about his work ethic and general experiences in Paris. Makes me long for a life of writing in cafes and drinking with friends every evening…
3.5 - Fine writing, very readable, entertaining, but lacks an oomph for me like in his other stuff. Recommended for Hemingway lovers.
Ehhhh, it's some anecdotes with sparse prose. Very Hemingway. Some of the stories are ok. Not bad, but not interesting, either.
