This wasn't too bad, it was enough to make me want to read about the other characters.I actually liked Shane & Ros.

Before I started this one I was thinking this might be too dark for me but nope, the blurb makes it sound darker than it actually is.

We know from the start that Shane's goal is to get revenge on his enemy by manipulating and destroying the enemy's son, Rosen. Shane has spent ten years in prison for a crime he didn't commit so it's understandable that he is miffed. Rosen is an art student who lives of his wealthy father's money while pretending not to be gay, because if the dad finds out he will not support him anymore. Mildly put.

Of course Rosen is an easy target for Shane. Young, inexperienced and privileged guy meets ten year older, tough and charming guy who takes an interest in the youngster. They quickly develop feelings for each other, even Shane, and he considers abandoning his initial plan. But stuff happens and shit hits the fan and Shane sort of revises his revenge plan.

I liked sweet, innocent Rosen and I had started to like Shane up to that point. He changed his ways and showed real interest and care. Then he loses the plot and crosses a hard, unforgivable line. My first reaction was that Rosen shouldn't forgive him, like ever. But then, people react different to trauma and when dissecting the situation and taking every detail into consideration I can see that obviously not everyone would come to the same conclusion as me. Shocker, I know! 🤪

Shane lives at a junk yard. It's him and a couple of other guys, strays that the owner, Frank, has taken under his wings. They are a funny bunch and one can feel the found family vibe. The next book in the series, Primal, focuses on Jag, who acts more like a wolf than a man, and I am not sure I am up for something that kooky right now.

This book needed an editor. Or maybe just the narration needed editing. Either way, it was very distracting.

The repeated lines are forgivable, and while "breed his creamy hole" would have been an unserious but acceptable line for the genre,  accidentally saying "cream his breedy hole" is a step too far. I spent the rest of the audio crying laughing. Unfortunately, that line flub was the most entertaining part of an otherwise boring book.

This book was trying too hard to be a dark romance, but it didn’t work for me. The only characters I enjoyed at all were Ross oh and the dog.
I felt like Shane was just an a – s – s – h – o – l – e. He never redeemed himself. I mean even in dark romance the d – i – c – k character usually has something that softens his edges.

The story also felt rushed. It seemed to unfold over a very short period, though the author wanted us to think it spanned over months. It didn’t flow and made the story uneven. I will not continue with the rest of the series.

The narrators did a great job with the material they were given.

The book opens up with the older MC dealing drugs to the younger MC's frat party. They do the exchange, then the older MC finds the younger MC in the house and follows him to a bedroom. It's the first time the younger MC has ever hooked up and they went straight into anal because he found the older MC "charming." Then, the older MC keeps referring to the younger MC as "boy" which was just unsettling for me.

*** I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review***

Scum is the first entry in K.A. Merikan's Wrong Side of the Tracks series. Scum follows Shane and his quest for revenge against the man who wrongfully imprisoned him ten years prior for a crime he did not commit. Shane's way of seeking retribution is through disgracing his enemy's 21-year-old son.

Rosen is a college student studying art and is forced to remain in the closet to protect his father's political endeavors. Rosen is following along with all of his father's rules until Shane literally barges into his life.

Shane and Rosen have instant chemistry, which was fun to see how dazzled Shane was by Rosen, which causes his plans to shift slightly in regards to his revenge plan.

Overall Scum was a nice read featuring a fun opposites attract pairing that challenge eachother.
