I just couldn't make myself care about the story. I didn't care about Ade, I didn't care about the guy she married, I cared so little about her pregnancy and everything just took forever to describe. The language was so unnecessarily and clumsily florid - once you notice that every description is a simile you just can't notice anything else. The central story about January took a backseat so often to other cr/p and that storyline was infuriating at the infinite bad choices January made at every turn. Bad was the only being I cared about. I wasn't initially going to DNF but the overwhelming relief when I decided I wasn't going to try to read anymore of it was telling.

(Take a shot every time something is described as "oily.")

Loved this book in a book concept. The story unfolded very gradually, just like the characters. Because the story did not completely draw me in, I gave it a 4.25. That might have to do with reading in English, in Dutch I find it easier to be engulfed in a book.

I enjoyed the reflections on our world and the helicopter perspective that the author put in the book.

The different worlds felt so hopeful to me. It was a written fantasy of how other dimensions and societies could be. Specifcally the spiralling tattoos of the written world were a beautiful idea, creating a life description.

I found the book written bij Yule Ian Scholar particularly interesting to read, as it reminded me of Piranesi and his quest to learn more about the world.

The idea that Fairy Tales and myths are based on actual events adds some wonder to our actual world.

This has made me very curious to what other stories the author has written.

3.5/5

I enjoyed this but overall it wasn't my style. I get why other people liked it though.

It reminded me of Erin Morgenstern's books and Where the Crawdads Sing. There is a lot of focus on atmosphere and flowery writing and slow pace and emotion, but not enough of a plot for me. I wanted more adventure in 10,000 worlds. As someone else said, the adventurous part was all told in retrospect, so I wasn't really living it with the characters. But anyway, it was memorable, the writing was nice and it tugged at my heartstrings, so 3.5 it is. I liked it, but sometimes it felt a bit long and I didn't want to pick it up, and I skimmed towards the last third. So I wouldn't buy it but I wouldn't not recommend it either.

Oh and the cover is soooo gorgeouuuuus

Welp I loved this book. Couldn’t put it down and read it in one night. Read if you love magic and good world building. The end.

This book is a magical story about change, growth, and love. Alia Harrow is an auto buy author for me; I don’t know why I took so long to read this one. January is the kind of heroine I want to read in every story—brave, clever, adventurous. She always feels slightly out of place, which makes her so easy to identify with. The supporting characters in her story (Jane, Bad, Samuel) are wonderful and well-written (though I was stressed for a lot of the book that the dog would die. If you also worry about this, don’t—the dog does not die).
The structure of the book with the parallel love story of Yule Ian and Adelaide, and how the stories intersected, was masterfully done. There were so many striking quotes (common in all of this author’s work!) that I was pausing to highlight and write down so often.
This story is the kind of magical adventure I am seeking in every story. I loved the ties to our world, which allows you to believe that magic could be through any door.
