An interesting account of one man’s heritage and experiences. I appreciated the links between different generations and Iceland’s spiritual association with glacial landscapes but felt there was too much of the religious aspects when I was expecting a more social/scientific commentary.

I love this book. By far the best writing on environmental issues I’ve ever read. It’s poetic and beautiful and hauntingly sad but drives the point home in a way pure numbers and stats don’t do. Even as a self proclaimed science nerd, the enormous scale of environmental issues are such that I often can’t wrap my head around them and have a hard time understanding their impact. That being said, this book was able to combine the science with storytelling in a way that drove the point home through emotions and ties to family, love, beauty, and legacy.

i had some high expectations for this book and i guess they were too high in fact. i did like learning more about iceland and glaciers and in a way it was also interesting too hear about nordic myths and the author's family background and what his grandparents did - although the latter wasn't really my cup of tea and i found it quite boring to be honest.
for me personally, there was also too much basic background on the climate crisis and why it's such a problem - i admittedly skimmed a lot. i guess this book could be more interesting for people new to reading about this topic.
additionally, i had my problems with all the dalai lama talk and the writing style and how everything came together (seemed a bit random maybe?). i guess it's good to have influential people help raise awareness for environmental crises but this one wasn't really for me.
so short summary: yay iceland, meh the rest of the book.

If I thought I knew a lot about this topic, I was proven wrong. So many new facts and also an interesting way of thinking and presenting the issue. I think everyone should read this book.
