Well, I feel like it would've been a better story for me if I hadn't remembered the plot from The Ward (unfortunately, an Amber Heard movie). As soon as we learned about Lauren and Olivia, I knew it was the same situation so nothing surprised me after that.

The stream-of-consciousness writing style made this so dense and slow to read and for the first time, I got the audiobook because I just couldn't sit through it anymore. Not only was the slow, detailed narration making it miserable to read through, the audiobook was just barely tolerable on 3 X speed.

The only reason I sat through it was because I hoped I hadn't figured out the final twist. Sure enough, I did. Not only that but man, did it drag. Like, get to the point. I knew all this 100 pages ago.

This book threw a plot twist on me every five seconds but did it so well that I am not mad at all. A weird book for sure but such a good read. I got HOOKED so badly.

Execution of a cool idea feel flat on its face. (Googled spoilers) the creepy factor was through the roof

Pretty fast-paced and engaging read.
From the start I had an inkling that
Ted and Lauren were the same person
, but after Dee showed up I started second-guessing myself... and then plot twist that
Ted, Lauren, AND the cat were the same person
?? Solid plot twist, definitely kept me on my toes

Wow. What to say about this book. I would love to read it again for the first time. This book was confusing, sad, funny, terrifying, thought-provoking, and deeply moving. It's not my normal genre, and I highly recommend going in blind. I think everyone should read this book.

it's hard to find the words for this -to describe this as a compassionate and even sometimes tender horror novel almost sounds like an oxymoron. full of incredibly-crafted scares and a sense of building dread, while also examining trauma, mental illness, and the long lasting impacts of abuse. the hype is definitely deserved! the author clearly did her research, especially around mental illness and
Spoiler dissociative identity disorder
. i do not have a that diagnosis so i can't speak to the accuracy, but the afterward details conversations she had with others - i'd love to see some community perspectives on this.

cw for child abuse, suicidal ideation
