Translated into Dutch, complete edition, translation H. Myshkin.
Stiff writing style, not really a page turner, sometimes difficult to get through. Entertaining story but badly written in a sloppy style.

I thought the writing was too polished, the pacing too sensible, and the plot too intriguing, (for it to contain anything real and good) but there is no such thing.

This was a whirlwind, but boy did I enjoy it! Really great book! Throughly enjoyed it.

4.5

I decided to take on reading this huge stack of a book the summer before I entered law school, one, because it was very long and I needed the assurance that I could handle long books (although law readings and the wonderfully engaging novel of Dumas could never be compared) and two, because of its famous quote, with those important words: "Wait and hope." I suppose I felt like I needed something hopeful – to witness someone struggle and overcome and triumph. To be able to say that it can be done because someone has done it.

Let me start my review by saying that on the first day of reading, I read 300 pages (30 chapters). This was not a goal I set – I just simply couldn't put this masterpiece down. And so it goes that I finished it in a week (even under) and my only regret is that it went by too fast because of my impatience to see how things unfold. I have much to learn about the "waiting" part, but I believe less on the "hoping."

The size might seem intimidating but I assure readers, especially like me who has never read a classic this long, that it is worth every page. The characters are easier to follow than you think because Dumas masterfully crafted how separate chapters shine a particular angle on the story, and consequently, on a particular character/s. There is no preparatory reading you need to take this on – you must only choose to keep turning the pages, must only keep waiting, as it were, for the crux of it all.

I read the Penguin Black Classics edition, translated by Robin Buss, and found it excellent and truly vital to how I was able to experience this story for the first time. There is nothing difficult about reading this book besides the sheer number of pages because the writing, and the translation, does all the heavy work and lifting to make it as palatable as possible.

As for the characters ... is there any novel protagonist as famous as Edmond Dantes? As familiar a name of a place as Monte Cristo? I have much to mull over still about this story and its people and all its wonderful weaving of fate and life and choices and faith, but I can say that every single character here reveals something of the human spirit – both its shadows and its lights.

Here is to waiting and hoping – one of the most important things to live by.

I loved the movie (I know, I know) but the book was amazing. I found it somewhat difficult to follow along at times and had to re-read several passages. I loved the depths Dumas went into. The book is darker than I expected, which was a pleasant surprise.

6 ⭐ I can't believe it took me this much to read it .. but alas if not for the audiobook I think it might have taken me more time . A great read ❤️
