Definitely worth a read if you have any interest in WWII at all. The pacific parts of the war are often overlooked with all the focus on Hitler and the Holocaust. Some dreadful things went down on the Japanese side of the war.
The first 3/4 of the book are fantastic. Full of the best details, compelling and very moving. I felt the later part of Zamparini's life and lives of the other POWs were glossed over. Like the childhood stories of Louie, I would have liked to have read details of memories regarding Louie and Phil as a father.s I guess despite the 10+ years or so of detailed research, I selfishly wanted more. More of who Louie became after the religious conversion. Did he volunteer at his daughters school? Did he read bedtime stories? Did he like her dates or husband. Those sorts of things. Maybe compared to the POW details those details were deemed boring.

This true story about an immensely resilient individual became hard to read after a while because of many descriptions of the extreme cruelty undergone by the POWs in Japan. I give it 4 stars because Louis Zamperini is one tough guy and Laura Hillenbrand is a skillful storyteller. Much food for thought about how some individuals have such an ability to survive and about the sacrifices military people make. One also marvels at the level of cruelty that people can inflict on others.
This is an incredible inspirational story. Laura Hillenbrand is a master at making non fiction read like your favorite novel.

I learned a lot from this book, and was moved by the stories of resilience in the most dire of circumstances.
What an incredible story. The amazing ability Louis Zamperini had to live through everything and to release his hatred and find forgiveness was truly inspiring!
So amazing. Hillenbrand is a great writer and Zamperini's life is so incredible. His forgiveness and resilience is inspiring. Of course I liked reading about him being an Olympic runner as well.

I think I would really give this a 4.5, sometimes there were too many details, but otherwise I enjoyed it, it was very eye opening and yet uplifting at the same time.
