Excellent, wonderful, and inspiring! What an amazing read!! I thought the story behind Louis' life was absolutely amazing. I couldn't believe the trials that this man went through and what he overcame in his life. Definiately a must read!!

THIS. BOOK. I’m not normally one to read biographies. I prefer fiction. However, this book just jumped up to one of my favorites that I’ve ever read. I’m not exaggerating when I tell you that the first word to come out of my mouth when I closed this book was “Wow.” I have so many feelings about this I hardly know what to say. The things that happened to this man were horrifying, but the ending was amazing. I feel uplifted, enlightened, and edified after reading this. I learned things about World War II that I was never taught in school, and I feel that I am better for it.

I also really liked the way the author explained the experiences of Louis and his PTSD. It felt real, and raw. It gave a good look into the challenges that so many veterans face when they come home from war. Louis was a good man, but that didn’t change the fact that he faces immense struggles when he came home.

If you are like me and you aren’t a fan of biographies, give this one a chance. You won’t regret it.

Unbroken is the story of Louie Zamperini, an Olympic runner. He enlisted in the American army during WWII. His plane crashes in the middle of the ocean, and him and two companions have to survive by their wits as they drift closer and closer to Japanese waters, where even more struggles await them. Louie's story is heart-wrenchingly painful and amazing. It shows how much the human mind and body can endure. His story is so powerful and inspirational, as well as terrible and overwhelming. I was crying quite often as I read. It is awful that anybody had to suffer what Louie and thousands of other POWs did.

Unbroken is enlightening, horrifying, and life affirming. I've never learned much about the Pacific side of WWII other than the attack on Pearl Harbor, and this book makes you think about it in a whole other light. Also, I felt it paired well with The Boys in the Boat as far as the coverage of the 1936 Olympics was concerned. It's a great read!

As far as stories worth telling, you won’t do much better than Louis Zamperini. All that he accomplished, all that he went through, and how he managed to emerge on the other side are all truly compelling, and it is so important that we take the time to remember the atrocities of history. But the detail with which the author approaches this account—including seemingly every piece of information she laid her hands on—was a bit too much for me personally, at times because of the horrifying nature of these details and at others just because of their sheer volume. I think I would have been just as affected and impressed by a book one third as long.

After reading this I have so much more respect for the men and women who survived WW II. It was educational and inspirational to follow Louie's story and the men who's lives intersected with him.
