Listened to the book expertly read by Edward Hermann. Absolutely mind boggling to consider how extreme the treatment of pows was, and the lifelong impact on those returned men. Written so well, as the compelling story that it is, which did require breaks to process the disturbing content.
This is a fabulous book about a rapscallion who never gave up. He led an amazing life and miraculously survived on a liferaft and endured a POW camp and abuse for years. We all can take a lesson from Louis Zamperini.
A fantastic story, brilliantly written and evocatively read by Edward Herrmann.
An incredibly written and well researched book telling a horrific story. This book kept me captivated and made me think so much about history and the way we tell it.
Didn't realize that I was going to be finishing this book on Memorial Day weekend by it seems appropriate. I was totally engaged in the story and was blown away by the Zamparini's story of survival. I never had realized how brutal the Japanese POW camps had been in WWII and what those POWs went through. But you don't have to be a WWII buff to enjoy this story - if you want to be inspired by someone that was taken to the depths of hell by life and managed to survive it and use it as motivation to thrive and managed to find forgiveness - this is the book for you.
I struggled in the beginning to get past the many details that made Louis Zamperini's life. This incredible story which could only be true for the circumstances of survival and determination lead this man through events we can not even imagine. I fell in love with the story and the life of Louis. I connected with his WW II story as my grandfather was a bombardier. I am ready to see this movie!
In history classes we learned about Pearl Harbor and the atomic bomb but details about life in the Pacific and Japan at the time were never discussed. The daily life of Allied POWs in Japan during the war is something I knew nothing about so this was definitely an eye opening read for me. Parts of the book are hard to read because of the violence and torture these men endured but I was so enthralled by the story and the exceptional writing that I couldn't put it down. It is absolutely one of the best books I have ever read.
