A truly amazing and awe inspiring story. The reason I'm rating 4 stars is only because there were a few parts that were just, well, boring/confusing. If history and WWII interest you at all then this book is a must read.
It lives up to the hype. I read this through Audiobook, and Edward Hermann's narration is on point.
Not something I would normally choose to read but I was curious and then hooked after the first chapter. One of my favorites!
If you only read one book this year, choose this! Hands down, best book I've read in a long time.
This was an incredible story, but I'm not sure how much to believe. It definitely left me with some questions.
I started reading this book with a raging headache on 1/16/12 after being up all night the day before with both girls and the stomach flu. I didn't think much of the book in the first chapter or two, but then it got a hold on me and I plowed through it. I honestly don't know how I managed to read a 400 page book in a week, but I did. I checked the calendar a couple of times. The reasons are that the story is so gripping and the narrative is so seamless. It reminded me of the flow in "The Devil and the White City" in that parallel story lines were used and in the stark contrast between Louie and the Bird. No one could make up a story with more twists and surprises. If it weren't so well documented, I'd think it was a novel. This is one book that lived up to the hype and far exceeded my expectations. Now on to the next story…
This inspirational story is almost hard to believe, in the trials our hero has to endure. Louis takes a while to grow on the reader, as he is an unruly and irresponsible boy who seems to have a death wish, and who surely would have been diagnosed as being somewhere on the Autistic spectrum in today's world. And I certainly get the impression that Hillenbrand glosses over some of his more outlandish sexual exploits - as these are merely hinted at and Hillenbrand is in the romantic business of making heroes, to a certain extent.
Nevertheless, the story of Louis Zamperini is gripping and amazing and full of variation and colour. Hillenbrand develops the characters of Louis' family and friends very carefully and well and writes with wit, understanding and sensitivity. Highly recommended.

The human capacity to inflict unimaginable and unspeakable cruelty and depravity is truly mind-blowing. This is a must read, especially for anyone particularly interested in WWII history.
