Ok, didn't really finish this book - it was our Sept book club selection - because I just couldn't get into it! I read the first 90 pages or so. I tried reading it while on a road trip to take my daughter to college. There was SO MUCH detail and felt a little gossipy. BUT, my book group RAVED about it! We had a spirited discussion about the book and it makes me think that maybe I'll try it again when I feel more contemplative.
After I started this I was like, Ugh, do I really want another WWII memoir in my life? But since this was the Pacific theater, and since our neighbor when I was a baby was a missionary' daughter who was in a Japanese work camp as a baby, but that's all I sort of knew about the Pacific theater, I really - enjoyed is the wrong word - couldn't stop reading. That sentence doesn't really make sense, but I promise the book makes sense.
Louie lives two whole lives in one... The runner and the airman. Louie’s dual and epic survival in the raft and then in the POW camps is riveting.
The author makes you see and live through the POW camps. The inhuman treatment makes one wonder how a species could behave like this towards its own.
I have new respect for POW’s and WWII veterans.

All I can say is ... what an amazing story! Most of us have heard so many things about what happened in Europe during WWII that we forget about Japan's involvement altogether! This is truly a moving, inspirational, and fantastically unbelievable story!
I love true stories about World War II and this was such a great one! It was fascinating and horrible and inspiring and tragic and wonderful. It was a new spin for me, with the setting in Japan instead of Europe. Definitely a must read.
It was difficult to start, but once I got past the initial "getting-ready-for-war" parts, this book really took off. Hillenbrand has done a terrific amount of research and assembled the story in such a way where I could not stop turning pages. The best part was how Louis' life changed after the war. Beautiful story.
Absolutely phenomenal! If you do not know this story you must read it!
