Simply incredible.

Tragic and fantastic.

I'm wavering between 4 and 5 stars on this one.

I've read other books about WWII, but never from the perspective of soldiers in Japanese POW camps. Louie Zamperini is amazing, a true testament to the amazing ability of (some) people to persevere, survive, and even flourish. I can't even imagine.

A fascinating, disturbing, and ultimately satisfying book.

Words can't quite address how emotional this book is.

Let's just leave it at "incredible".

I thought this was a very well-written, well-told story. I had a hard time putting it down at times.

I am shocked and amazed at what Louie (and others) lived through from the plane crash to the POW camps to the aftermath. What an amazing story.

An amazing story of the strength of the human body and spirit under the most horrific of circumstances. Probably better that I listened to it as I am sure I would have skimmed much of the description otherwise.

I confess that I wasn't at all sure that I was going to like this book. I generally don't read World War history and only had a vague notion that this book was about survival of something terrible [hence the title]. I was pleasantly surprised to find myself hooked from the first page, both by the power of Louie Zamperini's experience and Laura Hillenbrand's lovely writing. I was impressed with the fact that even though we as readers know what will happen from the beginning [Louie survives against all odds, hence the title], Hillenbrand managed to create suspense throughout the narrative and always keep the reader guessing about what would happen next. I was also struck by the fact that the most difficult part of Zamperini's story might have been after his release from the Japanese prison camps. Hillenbrand treats him sympathetically throughout his ordeal, although I wasn't quite convinced that the type of religious conversion she described could address all of Louie's PTSD symptoms. I particularly liked the addition of personal photographs from Louie himself really helped to cement the main actors in my imagination.
Well done!

Not for the faint-hearted. A powerful, heartbreaking story.
