Wow, so after an exciting beginning, then a slow first 1/3 of the book, I eventually became thoroughly engrossed in Louie Zamperini's story. After spending decades reading about world war II and it's atrocities, this is the first book that I have read that focussed on the Pacific side of the war. I had no idea what went on and the extent of the Japanese domination early on. It is astounding that Louie and the others in this book were able to survive the torture in the POW camps. It is amazing that he was able to become the man he continues to be (I can't believe he is still alive) after the horrifying things he went through. I resisted throughout reading this book googling him to see what became of him, I wanted the story to unfold without me knowing its end. Little did I know that it hasn't ended and at 95 Louie is still around. When I clicked on his name in wikipedia and saw that he is still alive it brought tears to my eyes (okay, I am a huge suck!) what an amazing testament of a man that could not be broken!

Story about a Olympic track and field start who enlisted in the military during WW2. After his plane crashed in the water, he was lost at Sea for a record number of days then held in Japanese POW camps until the war ended.

The story was quite fascinating, though I'm not a fan of the writing style of the author. We hear so much about WWII Europe, and yet there's another story that should be told too.

On my top 20 best books list. I'm totally in love with Louis... and Laura Hillenbrand was obviously the perfect author to tell his incredible story. READ!

I think this might be the best book I've ever read. Definitely recommend.

I wanted to read this book because I had read Seabiscuit by Hillenbrand and really enjoyed it. You will love this book if you love to read about interesting history revolving around a multifaceted character. I really loved reading about Zamperini's childhood and his experience at the 1936 Olympics. I had heard about his record surviving at sea, but I didn't realize that so much of the book would be about his experience as a POW in Japan. I learned so many things about the war in the Pacific that I had not known, and I have a new appreciate of war survivors from the Pacific. You should really read this book if you enjoyed the movie, and if you haven't seen the movie you should definitely read this book first. If your enjoy survivor stories, you will love this book.
