Best book I've read in a long time! I couldn't put it down!

I'm sad to give this book only 3 stars. It just wasn't great to me. It took forever to finish and is so much about torture and not much about what he's done in his life after. I liked it but didn't put it in my top books.

Moving, educational, heart wrenching and heart breaking...not for the faint of heart but worth it to really learn more about WWII and to gain an appreciation for the vets who gave so much for this country.

"Unbroken" is a very compelling book. It documents the WW2 story of Louie Zamperini, a B-24 bombardier shot down over the Pacific in 1942. The story of his survival through 3 Japanese POW camps is truly breathtaking. Though the story keeps your attention throughout, the writing itself is somewhat lacking. "Unbroken" is not a scholarly work, but clearly intended for mass consumption. Hillenbrand's occasional use of cliches and trite phrasing was annoying. The book is a very fast read. Highly recommended for fans of WW2 stories. Recommended for everyone.

To listen to Edward Herman narrate it on audiobook was truly great

Couldn't finish it.

Harrowing. Haunting. Horrible. Amazing. Powerful. Inspirational. Grace. Those are all words that come to mind when I reflect on this book. With less than 80 pages to read last night, I laid the book on my nightstand and whispered to my husband, "How could any of our soldiers have endured what they went though as a POW?" I initially wanted to read this book when it first hit the shelves. I even had it on hold at the library, but I just never got around to reading it. Finally I asked for the paperback version for Christmas this year. I started it late on Christmas Day and carried it with me wherever I went in case I had a chance to open it up and read a few pages. The story was so much more than I imagined it would be. I never knew or maybe never took the time to know what atrocities were part of the WWII Pacific arena. So much focus is on the European WWII venue that this story hit me with a shock wave. In the end it will be the faith, resilience and forgiveness of Louis Zamperini that will stay with me long after I shelve this book. I give this a very high recommendation.

Everyone told me this book was great and they were right. Excellent story on the strength of the human spirit and I also learned quite a bit about the treatment of POWs in Japan during WWII. Highly recommended.

I do not normally read non fiction, but this book was amazing. I had heard so many good things about it I had to read it for myself. Laura Hillenbrand is one of the most gifted writers I've ever come across. Her storytelling made this book come to life. Some parts were so real and so raw it was almost painful to read. I found myself trying to look away as if I was actually watching the images described. It's one of those books you read as fast as you can and then have to take a while to just sit and absorb what you have just read. I won't forget about this book anytime soon!
