Harrowing. Haunting. Horrible. Amazing. Powerful. Inspirational. Grace. Those are all words that come to mind when I reflect on this book. With less than 80 pages to read last night, I laid the book on my nightstand and whispered to my husband, "How could any of our soldiers have endured what they went though as a POW?" I initially wanted to read this book when it first hit the shelves. I even had it on hold at the library, but I just never got around to reading it. Finally I asked for the paperback version for Christmas this year. I started it late on Christmas Day and carried it with me wherever I went in case I had a chance to open it up and read a few pages. The story was so much more than I imagined it would be. I never knew or maybe never took the time to know what atrocities were part of the WWII Pacific arena. So much focus is on the European WWII venue that this story hit me with a shock wave. In the end it will be the faith, resilience and forgiveness of Louis Zamperini that will stay with me long after I shelve this book. I give this a very high recommendation.

Everyone told me this book was great and they were right. Excellent story on the strength of the human spirit and I also learned quite a bit about the treatment of POWs in Japan during WWII. Highly recommended.

I do not normally read non fiction, but this book was amazing. I had heard so many good things about it I had to read it for myself. Laura Hillenbrand is one of the most gifted writers I've ever come across. Her storytelling made this book come to life. Some parts were so real and so raw it was almost painful to read. I found myself trying to look away as if I was actually watching the images described. It's one of those books you read as fast as you can and then have to take a while to just sit and absorb what you have just read. I won't forget about this book anytime soon!

I know a lot of people complain that this has too much narrative for non-fiction, but I didn't mind at all. It's a compelling story and of course the conversations and quotes may not be authentic at all, but I can't care about that. Even though I knew how the story would end, I was completely captivated by the storytelling and couldn't wait to see what would happen (and nearly kill him) next. What a life.

It's not often that I read a book and I'm as moved as I was with this one. Not an easy story to read but certainly an important one.

A truly fascinating story that was well-written with so many details that it was hard to absorb all at once. I found myself constantly re-reading passages to see if I'd read it right because it was so astounding. Constantly had to remind myself this wasn't fiction. Gives you a whole new outlook on many subjects. Loved it!!

What a great story -this is a highly inspirational page-turner.

If you have not read this book and know anyone who fought in WWII, I strongly recommend this book. I had not read Unbroken until recently nor Hillenbrand's other book, Sea Biscuit, but I now know why both became long-standing best sellers.

I haven’t heard much of the Japanese involvement with WWII, so this was eye opening for me.

Well written and mostly engaging.

Loved this book! It's not only a testament to what the human spirit and the sheer will to live can carry us through, but an amazing history lesson in WWII. Most of my learnings have been around the war in Europe. Unbroken follows the true story of Louis Zamperini, from his life as a boy growing up in Torrence, CA, college, the Olympics and bombings in Pearl Harbor, to his plane going down, years spent as a tortured POW. What an amazing story, man and inspiration. Thank you to Laura Hillenbrand for bringing his story to this generation!

Horrifying. Sickening. Uplifting. Amazing.
