Incredible story of survival and overcoming odds. Taught me so much more about POW life in Japan. Probably more than I wanted to know. It's piqued my interest in WW2. My favorite part though is the love the brother shows Louis by steering his troubled youth into something great. And surviving on that raft that long was pretty epic.

This was truly an amazing story that really makes me appreciate the freedoms I enjoy.

It took me months to finish this book. I couldn't bear to read the POW story. The depth of research & breadth of experiences were overwhelming. It was well done but exhausting. Hillenbrand is a master at bringing facts to life.

For the second time recently, Laura Hillenbrand has taken a subject I wasn't convinced I'd be interested in and made it fascinating. Some of this story is hard to read (in that it's hard to comprehend the brutality of war) but she makes you WANT to know what happens next.

Highly recommended.

Unbroken was wonderfully written. The fact that this is a true story added gravity and emotion to the life of Louis Zamperini. This book started my fascination for WWII in the Pacific, and I would recommend it to everyone. Not only does it educate you on the conditions of the Second World War, it is also an absolute pleasure to read.

What did I think? I think every American should read it.

It was funny, horrifying, touching, informative, infuriating, beautiful, and I couldn't put it down. I read it all (but the first 4% - Kindle edition) in one day and stayed up way too late last night to finish it. Bravo, Laura Hillenbrand, for bringing deserved attention to these men and their brave families. Heroes, every one of them.
adventurous challenging inspiring tense fast-paced

I strongly disliked this book, especially since Zamperini himself already wrote a book about his life several years ago. Hillenbrand is just trying to make some cash telling the same story in slightly more of a narrative format. It may just be my bias because I had to read Zamperini's memoir first for school (in addition to this one, which is silly because they're the SAME STORY!!!), but I really did not like this book. READ ZAMPERINI'S BOOK INSTEAD!!! I enjoyed that one far more.

I enjoyed the story, but didn't enjoy the style of writing or narration of the audiobook.

It was one of those books you keep thinking about well after it's finished. I also shared tidbits with my family while I was reading, but I want them to read it for themselves - so not too much. War is even worse that we can imagine.
