The Takedown

The Takedown is a cute love story. Dee is an interesting character and i did enjoy the relationship between her and Teddy! It was fun seeing them work together and seeing Dee accept her feelings for him. I have read books by Lily Chu before and I really enjoyed them! The Takedown isn't one of my favorites but it was still a cute story! Thank you Colored Pages Book Tours, Lily Chu and Sourcebooks Casablanca for sharing this book with me!

Definitely prefers the other two books over this one, it was a little hard to get through with phrasing that was repetitive and the main character annoyed me at times, but I ended up liking her transformation. I wish the love story would have been a little more angsty- they got together pretty quickly.

This book wasn’t what I was expecting.

It was better.

The Takedown tackles DEI (and the lack thereof) in the fashion industry, racism in interracial relationships, toxic positivity, and so much more in this wide spanning romance.

An easy five stars for Lily Chu.

The themes I found most compelling related to the family's dynamics--adherence to the cult of toxic positivity, people-pleasing, parents imposing their opinions and desires on their children and expecting compliance, etc.

I really enjoyed the beginning of this book, the meet cute and flirtation of the two MCs, and their fun hobby of obscure trivia contests. Chu dealt with some heavy issues in this book, but she did it with a deft hand. As usual, her characters were artfully created and felt like real people. Reading 4 of her books in 1 week, my enjoyment of her tendency to hide Easter egg references to her previous works in subsequent volumes built each time I discovered a new one. I appreciate how she puts untangling family issues that aren’t always easy to navigate at the forefront of her stories.

With reference to the audiobook specifically, the sound engineer should have done a better job. There are certain sections of the narration where it is obviously patched in and they are far from seamless. This is very distracting. I would expect a higher caliber of production from Audible. The narrator herself did a wonderful job.
