I admit Mrs Hoover's books are hit and miss for me, so I was more than apprehensive when I approached this novel. Needlessly, as it turned out because 'Verity' was a ride from start until finish. The beginning and the middle were full of tension even if the mystery itself wasn't quite shocking. The end is where I've knocked down a bit of rating because it was something that I call the first-glance twist. It is a twist where it remains shocking as long as I don't look too closely at the events that lead to it. The more questions I ask the more it falls apart.

Overall a great story with messy characters that will take you on a wild ride.

This books triggered me a lot and actually caused me anxiety. It dealt with a lot of betray and abandonment issues and I wasn’t really prepared for how it would make me feel. Maybe if there had been one character who wasn’t a truly awful and despicable person, I might have found it better. It needed a Cousin Greg (Succession). I could never get past feeling that Jeremy was a manipulator and never telling the truth and ultimately I think believe the letter. Maybe I’m coming at it from the wrong point of view but that’s how I felt. The sex scenes in this are also a bit … weird - even a character says she’s bored reading them! Overall, I’m not sorry for Lowen. She made her bed, and now she has to lie in it.

Interesting plot with an interesting albeit obvious plot twist that turned confusing and half baked by the second 'plot twist' that I'm assuming was meant to make readers question things, except it had no build up and nothing to guide the readers to it. Characters started off interesting but felt more like cut out stereotypical archetypes the further the book went. Just... a lot about the sex life of every single adult in this book. Like, a lot for a horror novel that's not marketed as such. I know more about Verity's sex life than I know about her personality. I've got nothing against sex in books, no matter how detailed, but at a point it felt like it was just doing its best to make more time to describe to us how everyone had sex than the story itself. Not a fan of the handling of the autistic child either.

Had a lot of potential, could have been a really great book if it had been explored deeper. Maybe next time the author could dedicate less time to the sex and more to the plot, or at least try to write an ending that wasn't the thriller equivalent of 'and then it was all a dream'.

Three stars, given generously as this is the first and last of this author's work I will be reading.

This book is absolutely disgusting. It has some of the most heart wrenching descriptions and really makes you hurt for the characters. Make sure to read the content warnings and practice self care while reading this book because it is a very intense and heavy book. Even after saying all that, this book has such an amazing plot that hooks you from the first sentence and the writing style is so vivid and beautiful(even when describing horrific events)
