It was so interesting to see through the eyes of such unlikable characters. Lowen mostly because she’s so bland and doesn’t have much going for her character at all except for how much she DESPERATELY wants to live in the life of the woman she’s writing for, to the point where she’s willing to do immoral things to get there. Verity (through the autobiography) as a such a cold person who is only obsessed with sex rather than emotional part of a relationship and who
is willing to kill/attempt to kill her kid to get more attention from her husband
. There was just a bit too many plots holes for me
like if Jeremy was also in the car crash with Verity, why didn’t he have any injuries bc even if he did have a seat belt, you’re still gonna be dealing with broken ribs, bruises, etc. Also why did he suddenly decide he needed to kill Verity when Lowen showed him the manuscript even though he had already seen it?? Also so fucked up how Lowen made sure she got pregnant so she could be the perfect wife/mother that Jeremy never got to experience. Lowen couldn’t even look after Crew (ex. the time she let him play with knife until he bit it and needed stitches)
. I don’t think the kid needed to be attempted to made seen ‘evil’ like he was just a little kid who had gone through trauma. I don’t think Jeremy is the perfect man everyone made him out to be, there’s something fucked up there that everyone is missing. Why didn’t the nurse taking care of Verity suspect that she was faking it?
What the hell type of writing process is where you have to write the opposite of what you want to???
Also there was way too much sex for what there needed to be but I get Hoover was trying to show how obsessed Verity was with Jeremy.
Overall, the book kept me well entertained during a slow work day. Not very creepy or jumpscary to me but could be to some.

I quite literally read this book in 3 hours. I think this thriller/suspense with a sprinkling of romance might be where Hoover thrives.

Spoilers ahead: I didn’t like this book. I didn’t like any of the characters and listen, I love deeply flawed and selfish characters but the characters here were not it. They’re all assholes with no redeeming qualities. I can’t stop thinking about the scene where the mc (who is in her mid 30’s!) calls a 4-year old an asshole because he didn’t let her, a stranger who he’d never met before, into his house. The smut was… definitely something (derogatory). Honestly if you’re reading it for the smut I promise you, you’ll find better if you log onto ao3 so save yourself.

The suspense didn’t feel genuine and just felt like a result from the “guilt” she felt for wanting to fuck verity’s husband while the man was married w a disabled wife. Every detail and description that we are supposed to be given to feel the suspense was just the main character telling us how to feel or what to think which is just terrible writing. Colleen Hoover’s internalized misogyny, pro-life opinions, and how the only valid way to have sex is through “vanilla sex” otherwise you are a slut permeates the book and its really infuriating to read. Especially considering how popular she is among teenagers because they are really just romanticizing abusive relationships.
