This books triggered me a lot and actually caused me anxiety. It dealt with a lot of betray and abandonment issues and I wasn’t really prepared for how it would make me feel. Maybe if there had been one character who wasn’t a truly awful and despicable person, I might have found it better. It needed a Cousin Greg (Succession). I could never get past feeling that Jeremy was a manipulator and never telling the truth and ultimately I think believe the letter. Maybe I’m coming at it from the wrong point of view but that’s how I felt. The sex scenes in this are also a bit … weird - even a character says she’s bored reading them! Overall, I’m not sorry for Lowen. She made her bed, and now she has to lie in it.

Really great, fast paced read. Kept me guessing throughout the whole thing up until the end, and even my last minute guesses weren't correct. Beware of unexpected fatphobic content. But overall an interesting read.

Spoilers throughout -
I did enjoy this, however I was expecting a big A HAH moment at the end - which never really came for me. The main twist was the unreliable narrator, but this is a mystery where we will never figure out the truth, which leaves it open for the reader’s interpretation. For me, I think she was psychotic, but I’d be interested in hearing why others would think otherwise. I never really grew a connection to the characters, lowen and Jeremy just didn’t really do anything for me and I didn’t really care about what happened to them. I’d been putting off reading this for a while because everyone said it was really scary, and while it was tense and a very creepy I didn’t find it scary - more disturbing. I don’t often read mystery thrillers though and I enjoyed Colleen hoovers simple writing as I always do.

I am truly at a loss of words about this book.

I wish I could allow myself to rate it higher, I really, really do. It is just so DIFFICULT for me to look past all of the ableism that shines through with this book. I don't know if Lowen was written as a character that could be hated, but she definitely is one for me. I think, I THINK all the ableism was written in a way to avoid readers growing attached to Lowen because some of the things that were said/written about Verity were things that seemed to me only to be things that only a blatant abelist would say, and I would like to think that is not something people would blatantly show in this day and age, but I could be wrong.

There was, also, the descriptions of the deaths. I thoroughly enjoyed the descriptions and think they add to the book in its horror. However, they could be extremely triggering for anyone who has ever lost a child in whatever situation. It could, also, be triggering for anyone who has ever been in a physically or emotionally abusive relationship. If you want to read this book, please, please, PLEASE take a look at the content warnings and be careful.

There is so much more I could say about this book. I loved and hated it. There are just so many things I cannot let myself get past with this book, so I cannot give it any higher rating than what I have.
