A moving graphic novel memoir by George Takei about his childhood in the WW2 Japanese internment camps. This is an under-studied and shameful part of recent American history - I only learned about it as an adult, despite my liberal education! - and so it was educational, fascinating, depressing *and* uplifting. I loved learning more about the Japanese American community in LA; I even loved hearing Takei's very quick overview of how that kid became Sulu on Star Trek. Really good.

Greatly informative and I believe an imperative read. It is in the form of a graphic novel which I think is a be if it makes it easy for anyone to read and take in the knowledge within the pages. Even at 21 with a college education in teaching this kind of information wasn’t something I had been told throughout my education. I was aware that the United States had been unkind to the Japanese Americans within our country but I hadn’t been aware we had put them in camps and forced their hands at removing themselves from citizenship. I’m glad to have had this book and been able to fill that gap. I think everyone should read this book and learn more of our history outside of the short time you’re in the education system specifically because so much is kept from us or sugar coated.

My 9yo daughter and I read this together over the course of a few weeks. We both learned so much, and had many thoughtful conversations. I wish there was a book like this for all major historical events!

This was an excellent personal telling of Japanese internment during WWII. Takei told his family’s story from his perspective as a child, injecting innocence and joy into a sad and discriminatory event in history. The art was beautifully done and I enjoyed the reflectiveness of the writing.
