Another great graphic novel memoir, about a tragic time in history. The camps that held Japanese Americans in the USA in 1942.
I love how easy graphic novels are to take in these important histories. These types of books need to be in class rooms. It’s a great way to consume History, easy to absorb, you can pack a a lot in and it’s enjoyable to read, I mean, tragic… but enjoyable way to consume it.
“Shame is a cruel thing. It should rest with the perpetrators… but they don’t carry it the way victims do.”
Read it, have your children read it, your parents… everyone.

I learned a lot about the Japanese internment during World War II in reading this book. Takei’s storytelling was personal and thorough; I appreciated his voice and his use of perspective to share his story—from childhood through adulthood. I also appreciated Takei bringing to the page similar issues America is facing today. We, as a country, need to not repeat history’s atrocities. We need to learn and grow. I fear that we are repeating injustices, and I can only hope that justice will be brought forth in time. I loved the epilogue and final image within the book. In finishing the book, I felt hopeful.

Since the author was a child when everything happened, I think it’s difficult to get a bigger picture while reading the book since his memory are not complete.
The story moves on too fast and the time jumps are sometimes confusing.

Wow. Just wow. This was poignant and raw with gorgeous art. I cannot recommend this enough!

Powerful, vitally important, created with heart. Shows history on both a national scale and a deeply personal scale, from the eyes of a young child, a teenager, and an elder looking back on a story we all need to hear now more than ever.

Such an important book. There was so much in here that I did not know that should probably be common knowledge. The structure of this book makes it accessible to most, making it an easy recommendation.
