I'm mostly indifferent to this one, I don't think it was bad it just didn't super capture my attention. I do think I would recommend it to teens as a good YA fantasy. I didn't actually finish this one before attending bookclub (not bc I didn't like it but work took longer than expected) and I'm glad I found out about how anticlimactic the fight with the big bad is, that tends to be a huge pet peeve so I think being warned made me hate it less. Katsa and Katniss Everdeen are basically the same character so I think if a kid where a huge fan of that kind of character I would also recommend this (both books published the same year, in the 2000s/2010s there was only one kind of female sff protag).

Really loved this! I liked both main characters, which doesn't happen really often. Katsa developed a lot throughout the book, I actually liked the romance (and the lack of a love triangle) and I really appreciated a main female character that wasn't frail and didn't want to marry or have kids. I think the overall plot was also really good, well developed and delivered. However, I would recommend reading this as a stand alone because the other two books in this series are pretty bad imo.
I ended up loving this book. Here's why:
1) Katsa is an awesome female protagonist - strong, independent, flawed, changing
2) The love 'triangle' breaks the mold of typical YA love triangles - not going to say anything more on that so that I give nothing away
3) The storytelling is artful - really loved this author's way of unfolding the story
4) There is a death scene that may or may not be Shakespearean and I loved it because it, too, ended up being surprising in that it broke the mold of other YA novels
Really enjoyed it.

A fantastic book! The importance of the self is emphasized, with Katza staying true to herself throughout. I loved her insistence to never marry, even though she loves Po. I love that Po supports her decision. IT'S SO GOOD, YOU GUYS. THE ACTION SCENES ARE AWESOME AND THE STORY IS FAST PACED YET DETAILED.
It is a solid novel and I'm excited to read more stories from the Graceling Realm.

Reread it now that I'm out of high school and teaching middle school. Still amazing!
