l o l at all these reviews re: how this book is about a "man-hating bitch" because she doesn't want to get married. That... should not even require a rebuttal because it should not be something people today still think. Stay pressed, Nice Guys...

Sure, this is a pretty basic second-wave feminist story about a ~tomboy bad-ass and this sort of story is usually predictable to the point of sounding dated and does lend itself to the danger of making feminine qualities out to be bad, silly, shallow, etc. I don't think this book is particularly bad about that, but it's a valid criticism of this specific kind of fantasy adventure story. I mean, unless you actually write "man-hating bitch." Because that is the worst reaction, oops.

Anyway, I found much of this book (the writing in particular, and the names were distractingly awful ~creative fantasy names) to be underwhelming but it was ultimately a fun enough book to skim. Most likely something I would have loved as a kid.

Okay, so I won't pretend I have and always will struggle with teen fiction as a whole. Now and then there are good stories that interest me, and I admit that Graceling is one of them. It has an interesting concept and tries to emphasize the struggles that some of the Graced experience because of who they are. It makes me curious about the history of this world: have the Graced always been a part of it, and why are the different colored eyes what distinguish them from other people?

The plot itself took a while in forming itself, and for the most part the main antagonist didn't play any meaningful role in what was happening. When he did finally show up, he wasn't around for long and was easily defeated. For all the build-up this character was given, all the danger and foreboding he exhumed, reading that anticlimactic ending for him was very disheartening.

Katsa was an interesting heroine but I had problems with her, too. She was a little too much like Katniss for my taste: her wariness of people, her aversion to marriage or children, even her survival skills. And I'm just going to say it does bother me how much of Po's Grace helped their romance. Not saying that they weren't good for each other, but I can't help but wonder if the romance could've been just as good with any other Grace for Poe aside from that one.

There was also the problem of too much tell without enough show. Lots of exposition and not much allowed to be inferred by the audience. So even though I did enjoy the story, it still felt like there was a lot missing from it.

Loved revisiting this book! It was my first time listening to it on audio and I feel like events unfolded more quickly than I remembered. Pros: I'm still very into the worldbuilding and the concept of graces. Cons: I feel like Katsa forgave and trusted Po very quickly. Too quickly, really, considering what we know of her character.

What can I say I’m a sucker for a magic system with its own lingo, a brutish heroin, and a cute romance. Great story, there were many clever developments and stakes to the plot. The writing, including the dialogue, was delightful to read. This, along with the character development of the FMC were the highlights of the book for me.

Fast, fun, young-adult fantasy novel. I'd give it 3.5 stars.

I didn't care for the characters and the plot didn't grip me.

I honestly hadent expected much from this book and was very pleasantly surprised. I remember finishing it at like 2am after reading with my flashlight and feeling so warm and happy because it was just so… idk what the word is

I liked the overall story, but the full cast audiobook was hard to get into. Although, one guy sounded like General Shang, so heyyyy. Call me.
