1st and 2nd read: 5*
3rd read: 4* - this could be because I have now read the book 3 times and knew the plot and what was coming.
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

Pretty solid first book, wish the ending were less anticlimactic and really could’ve done without the gender essentialism dressed up in “girl power”

I LOVED THIS BOOK.
The main character, Katsa, was powerful and a super tough female character. However, she was also very realistic. She cried when she needed to, which was pretty often, but it was never annoying or over the top.
Also, the main love interest is GOALS because he supported her and strengthened her.

I don’t really know what to say, because this was just painfully average.

The characters? One-dimensional and/or overpowered.

The magic? Cool in concept, poorly executed.

The pacing? The climax was one sentence.

I wouldn’t say it was bad per se.
Apart from a character’s disability being cured by magic - which was addressed in an afterword in the updated edition I read – there was nothing offensively or outrageously terrible.
Everything was just… eh.

There is “spice” scenes but nothing explicit so it’s good for younger teens

Rating: 4 stars

Let’s be honest: we all knew I would end up loving this book. High fantasy? Adorable romance? An amazingly fierce and wonderfully flawed heroine? This was basically written for me. So why didn’t I read it sooner?! And why didn’t I buy the second book in the series (a prequel, I think) immediately?! Oh, the terrible decisions I’ve made. Honestly, I’m trying to write this review and coming up empty, because I don’t have much to say about Graceling except that it’s really good. While I might have needed a little more to make it a 4.5 star read, I’m glad this book was around when I was craving high fantasy, because I thoroughly enjoyed it. You will too. Most likely, you have already read it, because I’m about six years late. I can totally make up for this by reading the all the books in this series in a row, yes? Good.
