I was given this book as a gift by someone who thought I would enjoy although after hearing about her first novel, The Lovely Bones, I did not think it was my type of read. In a desperate attempt to read one night I grabbed this off the bookshelf because it was one of few books I had not read. About half way through the second chapter I had to give up on it and put it down. I felt like it was dragging by and filled with pointless details. I could already sense there was no point or resolution. And I honestly couldnt get over the fact that Helen murdered her mother and then dragged her corpse around. It just was not for me. In my opinion, this is a book best avoided.

I truly enjoyed Alice Sebold's other books so you can imagine my suprise when I started reading this book and it was awful. The main character is simply crazy and you are never given a very good reason why. I do not want to give to much away here, in case, someone decides to read this. All I can say is do not waste your time. It starts bad, it ends bad. There is no real story here.

Helen spontaneously kills her bullying and mentally ill mother, whom she has cared for over many years. Over the rest of the book we see her call her ex-husband for help in covering up the crime, sleeping with her best friend's son, and going to work as an artist model as usual. I found it bizarre and the characters completely unrelatable.

I felt like I was being tortured the whole way. Its been a long time since I read it, so I can't give you the best review but I clearly remember trying and trying to read it and not wanting to quit because I thought it wasn't fair to the writer but after this book..I don't do that anymore.

Okay this book really frighthened me for some reason. I guess it was because it was really deep. I found it to be quite depressing. If had to tell someone what book to read from this author, it would be The Lovely Bones. Almost Moon was morbid for me.

It wasn't horrible but...I just didn't really care for the plot. It was a disappointment after "Lovely Bones."

I followed the Nancy Pearl rule for books you can't get into, and even after fifty pages, this was still way too bleak for my taste. All that introspection post-killing her mother, but hardly any of it guilt about killing her mother was just too much. Since this was an ebook, I only metaphorically put it down after that point (read: deleted it from my Kobo.)

Alice Sebold's "The Lovely Bones" was heart-wrenching, chilling and very engaging - I loved it. While "The Almost Moon" kept me interested, and I was curious to see what laid in store for the narrator, the ending failed to satisfy me and fell far short of what I had hoped. Also, I felt the characters and some of their choices didn't really feel honest. Overall a decent read, but don't be surprised if you're let down in its final moments.
