This is not one of my favorites - the two people killed during the progress of the story are both children, and a third child is saved just in time near the end. It doesn't totally wrap up all the loose strings - one more death could have been attributed to the murderer. There is a lot of talking, particularly about "mad" people who get let out of asylums too early because the asylums are too crowded: to her credit, however, the murders are quite ordinary murders done for ordinary reasons (fear, lust, greed), and the clues are all there to figure out who did it. It's just that the pieces are not as neatly put together as they might: it's like she forgot bits of the plot by the end and just left them out.

I don't really know what to say about this book. It was definitely not my favorite entry into the Poirot series. It didn't even keep me intrigued enough to read it faster than I did in six months. But it was still pretty good, if not a bit predictable.

The story was good but the writing and dialogue was too drawn out and choppy. Lacking any real flow it was hard to get lost while reading meaning when the final ‘whodunnit’ was revealed it fell a little flat.
