I wanted to read this one before I watched the "Haunting in Venice" movie. It's kind of hard to see the connections between the previews I've seen for the movie and the book, so still not sure on watching the movie. I did enjoy the book overall though and enjoyed that I could discuss it with my book club. There are some dated references for sure (the characters are VERY focused on mental health issues in children and crimes being of a sexual nature, which does get a bit old quickly). The overall story of the murder was ok, but not my favorite. The thing that made this book enjoyable for me was all of the slight references that sent me down different rabbit holes (Snapdragon, the Rhine maidens), the new words I learned (catarrh (p.16), scatty (p.20), pecadillo (p.89), gaol (p.155)-to name a few), and some of the witty Poirot dialogue (especially the Mrs. Drake conversation on p.157-159) that almost always is my favorite part of Christie's books for me. I'm not sure about the characterization that this is one of Christie's "darkest" novels because although there were some dark themes, it didn't feel like the darkest to me so far having read several of the Poirot novels. I'd say worth a read, but maybe not the best Poirot book to read first to get hooked on the series.
