I received this free from the publisher via netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

This took me months to read, it really wasn't for me.

I was attracted by the cover, the summary and because I heard a lot about it before it came out (it's been a while, I know).

Honestly, the concept was very good: the historical setting, the mythology, the plot, almost everything came together for an excellent book.

The main problem I had with my reading was therefore entirely to do with the writing and the characters. I'd been told it was going to be an adult book, but to me it sounded more like YA or even middle grade. Overall, it was very immature, especially the dialogue and the main character. This clearly prevented me from enjoying my reading.

Nevertheless, I think it's a book that a younger audience will enjoy.

i should've known 😭 no really, it's my bad. i should've known from the usage of the word 'sasshole' in the blurb that i would hate the writing style. but i gave it a chance, because the premise was good. but my god the writing, it's exactly what you expect when someone introduces a book to you and unironically says sasshole. the writing, when it comes to dialogue especially, was just very amateurish. this really shouldn't be marketed as adult, the language is extremely YA (not the good kind). the main character annoyed me and she was underdeveloped along with literally every other character. i do think the plot was okay, and i liked the worldbuilding. i love a good magic system with cultural and mythological elements. not enough to get me interested in the sequel, though

Whoever decided to market this as an adult fantasy book shouldn’t be trusted

oops this writing style is NOT it

This for me is what I would class as a cosy read. It was fun, emotional, beautifully written and so engaging.
I really didn’t know what direction this book was going to take in the beginning as it is quite a short read but I wasn’t disappointed, so much was packed in.
This FMC is messy, real and full of growth. In the beginning she came off really immature and spoilt which was a bit frustrating but as you get deeper you start to understand why she is this way and it really makes you feel protective of her.
I kept waiting for that turning point where she discovers how powerful she is and how many fox tails she has, and though that point never came I’m happy it opens it up for a book 2 I’m not ready to leave this world yet.
