While I definitely didn’t enjoy this one as much as I did Project Hail Mary, The Martian was a really fun read! I’m once again very impressed by Weir’s ability to make stakes feel very real and science mumbo-jumbo feel accessible even as some of it zoomed over my head. The ending was somewhat cheesy, but I think the world could probably benefit from that kind of cheese every now and again!

I loved the story but the "voyage log" style of writing really ruined the suspense for me. Everything was told in past tense where it would have been so much more exciting with a traditional format. The narration was good. I actually think this is going to be my first entry into the Movie Better Than Book shelf!

Could only get a few pages in. Terrible fan fiction style of writing.

Not a sci-fi fan, but this was outstanding. I read it very fast because I was so invested in Mark and every hurdle he had to jump to stay alive. His humor was just as life saving as were his bontany and engineering skills. An incredible read for a laymen on space & other science.

i love the film so i knew i was going to love the book and yeah. it was really good!!!!!!! better than the movie for sure

it hooks you in right away and then you're just SO invested; when things go wrong you're devastated and when they go right you sigh with relief and the main character is so funny and sharp and clever and the way that he explains things makes what would be kind of dull science stuff seem interesting and clear. in fact the science in this book seems so realistic and reasonable that i did actually forget that mankind have not been to mars already😭

and of course we see so much of mark so we get to know him really well, but even all of the supporting cast feel well fleshed-out and likeable. venkat kapoor and mindy park my beloveds 🫶

and of course this made me cry more than once... it's just about the indomitability and perseverance of the human spirit and it's about community and teamwork and about leaving no man behind and it's about HOPE............ it got me, okay? and it will get me every time
