Above all this book needed a (better) editor. Piper keeps repeating herself, seemingly tasting her way through the best way to describe something. This makes the book almost twice as long as it could've been and results in a clunky, poorly flowing book. The story is nice, the characters fine, the bi rep fun, but its world didn't grab me like I hoped it would.
Some very vague spoilers under the cuts.
They’re lesbians Harold!
But also: KFHDJKHFAKJJSDFHAS WHY WOULD YOU SET UP A GOOD BOOK WITH ABSOLUTELY NO CLIMAX?????? And hear me out, I am absolutely going to fight all of you on this, slapping a into the final pages of a book when we literally know they have to win in order for there to be a second book so you can actually tell the story is NOT a good climax.
Once again I am mad because everybody wants to commit to longwinded as hell exposition and thoughts that characters are having, and nobody wants to actually let the plot take the wheel and let shit happen in their book. Sure, Amaris got trained and discovered what her fae heritage allows her to do, and Nox had her villain phase - this is not a spoiler, you’ll see what I mean. Also as far as I can tell, Nox being a succubus is going to be a huge plot point in the next book, and honestly even without saying so I could have seen that coming from a mile away.
I just. Nothing really happened that we didn’t already know. There were no surprises (save for one, but if I tell you then it won’t be a surprise anymore) and just the entire book amounted to not a hell of a lot to be honest. Underwhelming, but I do love gay representation so I will be reading the sequel.

A fantasy around two girls, Nox and Amaris, in a church orphanage which sells off its children (often stolen to begin with) for labour, brides, sex work and so on. After falling in love, they pledge to run away together before Amaris is collected by a pleasure house after her first bleed. An escape that doesn’t go to plan. After being separated into very different lives (assassin and sex worker) they discover their powers from their slight fae heritage and try to reach each other.
It's got some very strong areas and some decent spice in it, though it's definitely a “part 1” and doesn’t give much in the way of a payoff. I’d prefer it if it was more of a standalone but it has potential depending on how the rest go.

I didn’t hate the story but the writing makes the book so slow and tough to get through. There is a lot of potential there, but this book needs a lot of editing. One metaphor is enough!!!
