This book had its flaws, but I’ve also never read a book that showed dissociation so well. I don’t often see coping skills (both positive and maladaptive) being depicted at all and I really appreciated seeing that development continue throughout the book. I wish more fantasy books showed how people survive bad things (and not just the bad thing only) and how those coping skills continue to show up after the fact.

It definitely could have used more editing, but it wasn’t enough to keep me from enjoying the book.

I really wanted to like this book, but I couldn't get past the writing. The overuse of epithets ("the blond woman", "the dark man"), overly omniscient narration, repetitive language (using "stare" three times in one paragraph), and honestly the sheer number of typos took me out of the story every time I was starting to get immersed. The world building and politics felt superficial and simplistic, all way too easily explained so that the characters could get into more situations as swiftly as possible. Still, I cared enough about the story and characters that I might try the next book...

I got a deal on the whole series (like $5/book I think) and it seemed like a fantasy series right up my alley. I did enjoy the book. I did however also stop reading it altogether for a couple weeks. It was interesting, but I was able to just...forget about it. I decided it wasn't one I wanted to DNF and once it picked up (more middle to the end) I couldn't put it down. I liked the world building, the characters were pretty neat, and I always would love to live in a magical world.

Very slooooww start, but worth it. Trust me, get through the first bit and it’s one you won’t put down.

This was a fun step into fantasy for me. Even with the large amount fae, witches, monsters, and learning the lore of the story it was really accessible. I enjoyed the flip of expectations when it came to the main characters dynamic and feel like the second book will be a real ‘who is saving who’ story. My one change is that I wish there were more steamy passages and a chance to explore the grown up dynamic of the characters.
