I started this book without having really read anything about it. But it's been on my shelf for a while so it was a pick it up and run with it choice.
I have to admit that I struggled a little bit with this book. There really isn't an awful amount of plot to it. It felt like the plot was on the precipice of something happening but it never quite got there or at least didn't live up to what I was hoping for. Aside from the "bring down the palace' plot line, there were two romances which were somewhat entertaining but I would be lying if I felt heavily invested in either of them.
The characters had potential and I think if it wasn't for this, I maybe would have quit reading. I enjoyed Galina's character the most. She wasn't as harsh as Sera but still had a fire burning inside of her (literally). Vitaly annoyed me. I'm not sure if he was just too much of a stereotype for me personally.
This sounds like a negative review when I read it back. I guess it's not wholly positive, but that's not to say that I disliked this book. It was pleasant enough and I did stay engaged, it was just missing an extra spark I felt. I will keep an eye out for the sequel and give that a go.

To Cage a God (These Monstrous Gods, #1)
By Laura Nowlin
Dark fantasy, romantasy
My rating: ⭐️⭐️
To cage a god is divine. To be divine is to rule. To rule is to destroy.
Galina and Sera's mother has grafted gods into their bones, making them living weapons. It's up to them to end the cruel reign of the royal family.
Inspired by imperial Russia
❤️ I wish I had something good to say. I wanted to like this book. There were some parts that'd catch my interest, but they were few and far between.
💔 I wish I could place just what I didn't like about this book. The concept had me interested, and then.. I was just so bored. Nothing about it made me care. I put it down at one point and it took 5 weeks to pick it back up. I just kept wanting to DNF even through the end.
🎀 I got this in an Illumicrate box and it included a bonus chapter. This bonus chapter was probably my favorite chapter of the book. It gave me the feeling of potential, but even through the final 10 pages, I still could have put this down and never thought of it again.

I didn't find much attachment to the characters so I really struggled to get into this. I found some of the concepts interesting but I think because I struggled to like the characters I found it dragged a fair bit. I think about 70% of the way through it just seemed to really push the romance and sex elements and honestly then it just became annoying because it just felt forced considering what was going on in the story. I'm all up for that stuff when it enhances the plot but I didn't find it did that for me. There were a few cool characters (mainly ones without a romance plot) that were genuinely interesting and I found myself routing for
