A story about morality, the American justice system, violence against women, and nature vs nurture.. this was a riveting read but I don’t think this was one of those life altering, I’d read it again and again kinda books for me.

While the plot was well paced and I loved the non-linear storyline and shifting perspectives, some parts of the story did feel a lil trite and the message (albeit a really good one) a lil in-your-face. The writing style was clear and concise but I wouldn’t say beautiful- but then again I do tend to prefer more meandering , descriptive writing :p

There’s one part that really stuck with me though. When Saffy was interrogating Ansel, asking him why he kept the jewellery of the girls he killed, he responded with something like “they were supposed to protect me”. It reminded me of one of Lavender’s chapters at the very start of the story. She had meant to give Ansel her locket “to protect him” but ended up abandoning him before she remembers to. I mean it’s a good critique of the importance of a positive mother figure growing up, and maybe also the failure of the system to protect children growing up in circumstances like his.
