One of the benefits of being in the Kindle Unlimited program is having access to mysteries that are now on publishers backlists. This is the 7th book (I read one out of order) I have read in this series, and I have enjoyed this one as much as the others. My favorite of the series is still the first one: [b:Rest You Merry|6508566|Rest You Merry (Professor Peter Shandy Mystery #1)|Charlotte MacLeod|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/book/50x75-a91bf249278a81aabab721ef782c4a74.png|1394240].

My expectations for this one were slightly exalted, knowing that it had been nominated for an Edgar. (Or maybe it won? I don't recall and I'm too lazy to look it up.) They were not quite met. It's an average MacLeod, so obviously what I'm into at the moment, but I don't think it's one of the better ones.

I can't resist an academic mystery and Peter Shandy is such a great character!

Too many characters, boring plot, bland writing, cardboard characters, bored bored bored. Didn't finish it, b/c I died of boredom.

I had never heard of Charlotte MacLeod until I came across this book at a little free library in Salem, and I'm honestly upset that I've gone this long without this series. The characters are quirky and endearing and the dialogue is perfect. It wasn't what I expected, but I loved the fact that the mystery often seemed to take a backseat to the small-town gossip. This is not a gritty or dark crime novel, but is perfectly suited to settling down with a comfy blanket and a cup of tea and relishing in the rumors and petty insults that comprise a surprisingly large part of the murder investigation. I was very pleasantly surprised by what initially looked like any other cheesy mystery novel, and I will definitely be reading more of this series.
