Update for read #2: this one holds up. There is a spectral/purgatorial aspect to Outer Dark that is difficult to figure. Every character holds the potential of either a prophet or a demon; it is up for the reader to decide. Once again I’m amazed by the narrative breaks for the three vagrant men. They are compelling, and they feel prototypical to Blood Meridian’s Judge Holden with Outer Dark being written 15 or so years earlier than Blood Meridian.

I waited to give a formal review to this book because it was so heavy. Outer Dark is a top 3 McCarthy novel for me. It is both suffused and desolate of humanity and love. McCarthy’s language is unparalleled, and his gruesome imagery forced you to recognize the brutality of humanity. Every episode and character exposes a reality that you, as the reader, are forced to grapple with. The three men almost reach the pinnacle of Judge Holden as the most compelling character in fiction for me. There are small issues, such as chronology confusion for me and odd complexities, but these can easily be overlooked with the beauty of every other aspect of this novel.

A baby is stolen, or sold. The dude is kicked out of the house, and is the brother of the mother???? And the girl goes on a worthless search for her son, or daughter. What? Then there is a bunch of religious alegories, without any profundity. No characters, no plot. I don't understand what this is. And I'm pretty sure the author doesn't either.
