First of all, I love when I'm answering the question "are the characters loveable?" and have to say "It's complicated"... because, yes, characters should be complicated, that's what makes them fun! It's what gets me hooked! The characters in this book are anything but loveable, until they are, and that swing from morally gray and kind of the worst, to morally gray but now you're in their corner and rooting for they HEA is one of my favorite plot line/tropes you can find. I also listened to this one and the narrator really nailed the voice and emotion throughout and while I listen to books far slower then I read them, it for sure kept me coming back for more.

The story is full of heart, mystery, and a touch of magic that keeps you hooked from the first chapter. The narrator brings the characters to life with such emotion and energy, making it an immersive experience. I loved how the book effortlessly blends romance with a little suspense, and the pacing was perfect. If you're looking for a cozy, captivating story with just the right amount of smut, and some top-notch twists, this is a must-listen.

I thought this was the author’s first book. Some of the writing is a little clunky and repetitive, particularly when it comes to the characters feelings and the world building. I felt it could have done with more editing. It was fine but I wouldn’t go out of my way to recommend it.

Dystopian fiction + Urban Fantasy, this is an easy to read book that leaves room for additional stories in this world (and with the same characters) without leaving you on a cliffhanger.

There is no better way to describe this book than by calling it a Beauty and the Beast and Ocean’s Eleven mashup. Between the vast magic system, the brooding romance, and the high-stakes heist, this book felt like it had it all. I loved the found family that was already firmly established between Kierse and her friends, Ethan and Gen, long before the start of this story. It made the internal battle she faced when having to choose to stay with Graves or go to help Ethan that much more dramatically charged. You could feel the pain of her choice but knowing her history makes it easier to understand why she makes the decision she makes.

The romance was also a delightfully slow burn that felt palpable from the beginning, and while I am normally not a fan of love triangles, having Lorcan as a casual interest added another dynamic that brought tension without getting irritating. I did feel as though the King Louis plotline got a little convoluted at times and it had a very quick and anticlimactic end when Kierse just easily decapitated him. I wish that plotline had ended a little more meaningfully so that I wouldn’t leave feeling like so much time had been wasted. The actual ending did make up for it a lot with the main twist that Graves and Lorcan were the Holly and Oak Kings all along.

Very mid fantasy book. The beginning was rough. The author’s idea of world building is to painfully describe every block of NY. Parts of the story were engaging, but it was lacking in a lot.
