This was absolutely incredible. Space, wormholes, robots, love, friendship, artificial intelligence, and incredible, DIVERSE characters??? Oh my god, it was the book I didn't know I was waiting for! It's definitely going on my favorites! 100% recommended!

This book was a very fun & fast paced read. It had been quite a while since I read a good sci-fi book, but Defy the Stars reminded me of what I love them. I really enjoyed the way that the characters developed throughout this novel, as well as the way that they coped with challenges. I will say that there were a few moments where the plot was a bit convenient, but not enough to take away my enjoyment of it. This book also took a hard look at what you believe, what is permissible to do in defending what you believe, & what happens when your beliefs are challenged.

Note: I started this as an audiobook, but switched to print 30% in because I couldn't take the narrator's robot voice anymore. My husband listened to the entire audiobook & was fine with it, but I'm picky about my narrators so take that for what it's worth.

Normally, I’m not a big sci-fi person. If it’s sci-fi with more fantasy, then I’m more likely to read and enjoy it. However, Defy the Stars was pretty much pure sci-fi. And the pages - oh, there were SO MANY PAGES. It could have ended so many times, but it keep going and going and going. I’m glad that I read it, but I personally feel that it could have been shorter. In spite of that, the action and adventure were exciting, and someone who likes science fiction will love Defy the Stars. Everyone else might enjoy it as well. Bonus for fans - there are more books coming!

Interesting plot, characters, and decent writing. Good one time read. Probably not going to read any sequels though.

Extremely enjoyable scifi novel. Readers will relate to the characters even though one character is not human...or is he? Noemi, a warrior of Genesis (a planet that has been fighting Earth, it's pollution and tech for generations) spends much of the book trying to decide how Abel can be SO like a human. Throw in some intergalactic strife, deception, and wicked cool space ships, you've got yourself an amazing story. Covering major ethical questions about what does it mean to have a soul and be alive while being action packed and totally plausible, this book is the best read I've enjoyed in quite a while. Go get it and get lost in the worlds and stars.

Oh... my gosh?! How is a book this good not more well known? I only heard of it because I loved Claudia Gray’s Star Wars novels and wanted to check out her other stuff. Seriously, the way she develops Abel’s character, the way she shows how people from different cultures view war in different ways, the philosophical and theological questioning?? the side characters (I would die for Virginia), the SLOW BURN??.... it’s everything. Noemi and Abel’s dynamic is so perfect and sweet and I can’t wait for more.

Me at the beginning of this book: oooh a robot that has possibly developed human emotions, interesting concept

Me at the end of this book: NO ONE HURTS MY BABY BOY ROBOT’S FEELINGS AND GETS AWAY WITH IT 🤬🤬🤬

I cannot wait to read the other books in this series and more of Claudia Gray’s writing!!

Ok now spoilers:

Ms. Gray. You Casablanca-d me. You even told me you were going to Casablanca me and I didn’t see it coming and I’m crushed. But that’s on me because I refused to see the signs. Yes I know there’s two more books. Yes I’m going to read them. In the mean time thank you for the ANGST 😩😩😩
