I loved it! The illustrations are beautiful, the characters are alive, and the story is heartfelt. Shubeik Lubeik reminded me why I love graphic novels. It’s dynamic, entertaining and intimate. It’s Deena’s Mohamed’s debut book, and has been out for about a year but was just translated into English this year. I particularly love that it reads right to left because it was originally written in Arabic, and the translator keeps some Arabic exclamations and phrasings. I particularly loved that a lot of the book avoids the traditional sequential comic boxes, and borrows from Nick Sousanis’ style comics of using the visuals and dialogue boxes to gently pull the reader in the direction the author wants them to lead. That, and many pages showcase just a single, large, and powerful image rather than continuing dialogue. I would really recommend, if you like comics. Warning that the book is huge and very heavy, though!
