I really enjoyed the sci-fi aspects of this book, but I could have done with a whole lot less of the politics. If the author would have dropped nearly all of the Gabrielle Ashe and Sedgewick Sexton chapters, he could have trimmed 150+ pages easily. The senator was such a stereotypical corrupt politician, that you could have explained all of his motivations in a few paragraphs at the beginning. We didn't need all of the details and didn't need to follow his campaign manager around town uncovering his misdeeds. Little side tangents like this just drew the story out way longer than necessary. The plot was already fairly easy to guess about half way through as it is.
Sounds like I didn't like the book very much, but I kind of did. Even though I guessed the mastermind of the incident near the middle, and was getting bored of the senator's shenanigans, I kept reading. I thought about skimming to the end several times, but I got drawn back in. It wasn't the characters or a completely original story (for a better version of this book, you should read "Not Alone"... lighter on the science, but heavier on character development and much higher aspirations). It was the way clear-headed scientific observation moved the plot and the structure of the chapters (short and sweet) that kept me going. I kept saying to myself, "I'll just read one more chapter, then I'll go to bed." And really, that's what books are supposed to do... engross you in a story until you can't let go. So for that, I have to admit that I got into this one quite a bit. I wanted to see the details of how the deception could be pulled off.
Dan Brown, overall, is kind of hit or miss with me. I'm a fan, but not a fanboy. "Da Vinci Code" was pretty good, "Angels & Demons" was great, "Digital Fortress" was OK; but none of them are terrible. I have "Inferno" sitting on my bookshelf, and will be excited to dig into that one later.

Ugh, I'm so tired of Dan Brown. Remind me not to read any more of his books!
I rated this based on the genre. Not a great piece of literature but not trying to be. A bit too long but very entertaining.
This was the first Dan Brown book I ever read (borrowed it from a friend) and thought the writing was on par, the creativity was through the roof, and the characters well defined. Overall I liked it even though at times I felt the storyline/scientific elements were over my head, but I liked the style enough to see what else he had. When I found out he was also the author of The Da Vinci Code (Which I had heard many great things about), I decided that while this was not my favorite story, he was definitely an author worth giving another try!!!
