Deception Point

Dan Brown

3.5 AVERAGE

It may sound cliche, but I really like all of Dan Brown's books, and this one is no different. It drew me in, it was interesting, and even though I have been super busy, I kept making time to read it. It was a little predictable, but that's alright, it was fun guessing what was going to happen. Overall, I really enjoyed it.

Every Dan Brown book keeps me captivated straight through to the end. Again, the science seems sound to a lay person such as myself, and it is not dry at all.

Dan Brown tells a very "Dan Brown" like tale. The story is basically a mashup between Michael Crichton and the show Scandal. It moves incredibly fast and has impossible coincidences but it does entertain. The plot is intriguing but the secret antagonist's reasoning is pretty flawed. The book divides the story between Washington intrigue and the main character's field work. The Washington stuff was more interesting as I never felt the field team was ever in actual danger. Not Brown's best work but passable.

Okay, probably closer to 4.5 stars, but just so fun to read. Dan Brown at his best/worst. A continuous onslaught of incredible escapes keeps one breathlessly turning the next page to see how they get out of this, even as the totality of the story itself moves from the merely very improbably to the ridiculously unrealistic. This one involves NASA, a US presidential campaign, and a shadowy government surveillance agency. The pace of the interwoven stories is even faster than Da Vinci Code or Angels and Demons, as I recall them, though the character development is perhaps curtailed as a result. Even though published in 2001 it surprisingly does not feel that dated (okay, a fax machine plays a crucial role at one point, but otherwise no). A great read.

Well, I can see why Dan Brown's career didn't *really* take off until the Langdon novels. "Deception Point" failed to capture me like those have. It's dated, predictable, and overall just bland. If you're an author completionist, you might have some fun, but otherwise, you are good to skip it.
