Welcome to the Goddamn Ice Cube: Chasing Fear and Finding Home in the Great White North
Blair Braverman
Touching and fascinating, Braverman excels at painting a picture with words. While I could never imagine for myself a life experience like living on a “goddamn ice cube” or mushing dogs through a blizzard, it was awesome to experience it through someone else’s eyes. The Norwegian stories are curious and interesting, if some seeming a bit far-fetched (I know the book has received criticism for that). All in all, an enjoyable read. Certainly not a “must read” or anything, but I liked it. And yeah okay, I did tear up at the end of the acknowledgements. I’m emotional, so sue me.

A story of a California girl who is obsessed with the cold north and finds her way there. A unique story of trying to belong, feeling like a fraud, and then when the right moment comes along, finds out she has prepared herself for this moment all along.
Being half Finnish, I should know cold. However my mother moved to Hawaii where I was born and I have been sensitized to cold. I have been obsessed with the north too... Finland and Alaska. However, I didn’t bother learning to sleep in a snow cave (coffin) or how to dog sled myself through a blizzard. I’m way too soft for that, so I give the author much respect for transforming her life into the life she wanted to have.
I absolutely love her partner. When I heard he was on Naked and Afraid, I immediately watched it. His kind heart came out in the show like it was portrayed in the book.

Really interesting - a look into a totally different world.
Whoa. So very good. I chose to read this while camping during a heat wave so I could conjure up the idea of being cool again, but this book is so much more than a coming of age adventure story about the artic and dog sledding (though tbh those things are more than enough to interest me). Such deep stuff in this book about male violence and microaggressions and living with and through fear. Plus the Artic adventures and lovely writing.
I relate to what Braverman has to say in this book so much. About adventure, about being tough, about looking for home in people, places, and animals. She feels like a kindred spirit in so many ways. I wanted this book to hold together more than it did, though. I’m not sure it’s a book that knows exactly what it wants to be. But that’s how lives are, too, right? Anyhow, she has lots of great stories and poignant things to say. Worth reading.
Another in the "love to read about adventures I'd never do but am happy other people did and then wrote about them so I could read them" series.
