Heart-breaking, sweet, beautiful narration, bitter reality of life! Two sweet characters - incredible relationships forged in the fire of difficulties, dedication and caring in spite of everything and everybody! The story how diamonds can be found in mud!

If you are looking for your next young adult romance that has sweet charm and innocence in it, then look no further! Sophie & Carter was such a surprise read for me and I finished this book in thirty minutes after nonstop reading.

Carter and Sophie live next door to each other and have been friends ever since. They both come from dysfunctional families and know secrets about each other that no one else does. Carter grew up in an abusive household and now takes care of his Mother who has mental disabilities after being beaten so many times by her long gone husband. Sophie is busy raising her 3 younger siblings while their Mother is busy being strung out on drugs and being a prostitute. After school ends and the pretending of being normal comes to an end each day, they both have to go home to real life. They go through the daily routine of taking care of what needs to be done. When the day begins to come to a close, they sit outside on the front porch swing and just be there for each other.

With alternating points of view for each chapter, the reader gets to take a glimpse into the mind of each character. While Carter is scarred on the outside, he is sweet, gentle and protective of everything he loves on the inside. I loved his character and found myself falling for him along with Sophie. While Sophie has had a hard life as well, she is a strong and brave girl who finds the strength everyday to take care of her siblings and be a role model for them. She is kind, patient and strong with a devotion to her family that was wonderful.

This is a quick read, but an outstanding read that will touch you. I loved the ending and I couldn't have been happier. I do hope the author writes a sequel to this book because when it comes to Sophie & Carter, "I LOVE THEIR GUTS!"

What a great, heart wrenching story with a happy ending. My only complaint is that it wasn't long enough!

This little book was a short read. It's a story about Sophie and Carter - best friends since they were kids. They're also next door neighbours but at school, they pretend they don't know each other. Which is okay if you'd never even acknowledge each other's existence. But that's not the case with these two. At home, they'd had to bear witness to each other's daily heartbreak; they're each other's pillars of support; the lights at the ends of their tunnels. Their situations at home were far from ideal but no one outside of their little world knew about the realities of their lives. With graduation upon them, they're becoming more and more restless about their relationship. They both wanted more but were too afraid to ruin what they have.

The lead into this book deceived me - the cover, even more so. My first impression of this book was that it was going to be a fast and light read. Be forewarned, this is a heart grinder. When I got past all the throat-clogging scenes, I was smiling tearfully. Because at the end of it all, I was glad they still have each other.

I have a theory which may offend some people; but the truth is almost always offensive and, as the old adage goes, it hurts.

Theory: For the most part these big name publishers are churning out mediocre- if not crappy- books disguised with pretty covers. The smaller publishers are actually working harder to write quality material but they are overshadowed by the flashy covers. C'mon readers! All that glitters is not gold. Just because the cover is great doesn't mean the book will be. And vice versa.

The point I'm trying to make is that the cover of Sophie & Carter might not be as aesthetically pleasing as some of the bigger releases of 2011 but the writing more than makes up for it. I'm ashamed to say that I almost passed up this book because it wasn't sparkly and didn't make be croon at first sight. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked this book. In fact, I enjoyed it so much that I'm deducting a star because it was so short. Who would have thought?

You know when you come across some reviews that mention that the reader cried their eyes out or teared a little bit in some parts of a book... well when I come across a written book review like that I just roll my eyes and think "Really bitch, really? Did you cry over a book?"

...Well I have changed since reading Sophie & Carter. I was hooked and so attached the ALL the characters that I did tear up in some parts of the book. I cried out in shock, disbelief and happiness.

This novella was well written and I just love Chelsea Fine's way of writing. She hooks you in and then you find it hard to put down a book - especially with her Archers Of Avalon series - she's a very talented writer who knows... :)

Sophie & Carter were great characters and their stories were well written.
This story was simple but effective and I loved EVERY PAGE of it. I also loved the HEA at the end.
Chelsea Fine sure is an author to look out for and is now one of my top three fave authors.

Happy reading! :D
