Sophie & Carter is a very touching and captivating story about two teens who has their own family problems and longed to escape from it and start anew. There is no peace in the world they could find except in each other and it couldn't come soon enough.
The story of Sophie and Carter is very well-written and it struck me with its realness. I love the author's writing style of alternating between Sophie and Carter's perspective. It told us of their thoughts and feelings. We saw their struggles and determination to keep on going not only for themselves but also for their family - the only family they have left - and it was so touching. Sophie and Carter's feelings for each other is so pure and genuine, it breaks my heart to even think of one without the other. They fully support and look up to each other. Sophie depended on Carter's bravery and patience while Carter needed Sophie's optimistic character to keep his desire to live. Throughout those torturous years, they had each other's backs and, somewhere along the way, accepted each other's flaws. The author did a fantastic job describing everything, I could almost feel their emotions; all those sadness, desperation, as well as their temporary happiness and peace during those alone times at the porch swing. They have endured a lot of pain both physically and emotionally for someone their age. What they went through is so very heartbreaking; it tore my heart apart over and over again.
I felt so many emotions reading this for it was both very amazing and sad. Sophie & Carter completely blew me away and I loved it. This lovely read deserves 5 stars and more.

Too quick! But I guess it's a novella. Sweet little story here, a bit heavy on the melodrama of these teens lives, but it is sweet the way that they find and support each other through it all.
I could not put this book down. I thought it told the story of situations a lot of teenagers face and we are seemingly unaware with frankness and honesty.
It dealt with real issues in a real way and I like how it got in your heart. I really felt for these characters and went through page after page after page to find out what happens to these courageous teens.
I thought the different fonts added a good sense of journalling to the book and made it clear it was each individual character's story which gave it more impact.
I would definitely recommend this book.

This was just what I needed. Something light and fluffy, but with a serious undertone.
During school hours, Sophie and Carter don't know each other. It's not as if they despise each other, it's just they don't go out of their way to talk to each other. Nighttime, however, is a completely different story. Every night, these neighbors sit on the swing on Sophie's porch and discuss their day - not their school day, but what happened once they arrived home. You see, they both have a secret that only the other knows. Sophie's mother is a prostitute who doesn't care that she has four children. She hasn't been home in months and only sends money when Sophie calls to remind her. Then there's Carter. Carter's taking care of his mother who's mind has been broken by an abusive husband - an abusive husband/father that Carter got rid of when he was old enough, but they both still bear the scars.
The night is only time of day these two feel at peace. Not wanting to break what they have, they both keep their true feelings a secret. The only secret they have from each other.
I adored everything about this. Both characters were so sweet and unbelievably strong. Their home lives were in shatters yet they both trudged on. Their friendship was their strength and I enjoyed watching them both realize what they meant to each other.
My only issue was, of course, that it was too short. But a great first read from this author and I look forward to reading more of Fine's work.

3.5 stars
This is a novella, and because it is not a full-length novel, some missing elements can be forgiven. We are basically treated to a glimpse into the lives of Sophie and Carter at a turning point, like looking into a window and watching a scene play out. We don't know all the details, such as how is Carter able to support himself and his mother financially without a job and still help Sophie out with groceries once in a while? We know just enough through recalled memories on both their parts to piece together the big picture.
The family lives of Sophie and Carter are nightmares that no child should have to live through. It is extremely heartbreaking to see the abuse even through their memories. The neat and tidy ending that allows them to be together gives us the HEA (to the extent that is plausible for them) that we feel they deserve.

Okay, so earlier today I finished reading Anew by the same author and thought I'd might as well give this one a try.
I definitely wasn't disappointed. It was a very VERY quick read, at least for me...
But it was great! I was very emotional while reading it but so proud of Sophie and the accomplishments that she had! And Carter, I loved how responsible and caring he was and how protective he was of Sophie and his mother!
The end wasn't a "happily ever after"... But it was perfect, because like she said, they would have their tough times, but they would be TOGETHER, with the porch swing!!!
Loved it!!! Definitely give it a try, it's worth it!!!

I'm... not quite sure what to do with this one, and I'm not quite sure the rating is accurate. It's probably more like 3.5 stars, but yeah, take it with a grain of salt.
I really, really, really loved parts of this. While it was short, it was poignant, and had my favorite trope of all the tropes. However, I did feel the book was emotionally manipulative sometimes, and I felt like sometimes, the book was essentially like, PUNCH PUNCH AND ANOTHER PUNCH TO THE GUT, it could have been a bit longer to even it out a little bit (and I think that would've taken care of the emotional manipulation). That said, I did really like a lot about it though and read it in under an hour, and Sophie and Carter are WONDERFUL and super cheesy and tropey and I really enjoyed them, even if their respective family drama may have been a bit too intertwined in their relationship.
