Friendship and Romance

I received a free copy of this book through FirstReads in exchange for my unbiased opinion.

Best friends since school, Mitzi, Paula, and Jody decide to follow through on a dream they have by opening a dress shop that caters specifically to plus sized women in their small Texas hometown. When Mitzi's high school crush, Graham, comes to the shop looking for bridesmaid dresses for his daughters, Mitzi's feelings for him are as strong as ever, and she immediately falls in love with his girls, too. While Mitzi wonders if she might have a future with Graham, Paula and Jody are both dealing with drama in their own lives.

The story and characters were so clinched and unrealistic. What teenage girls, when offered a job, say they'll take the job but don't want to be paid. I had trouble getting into this story because I found the protagonists aobnoxious rather than endearing. There are obviously a lot of people who loved this book, so if you enjoy romances and friendship stories with one-dimensional characters, you might want to check it out yourself.

I picked this up for a fun escapist vacation read because I remember enjoying The Ladies' Room by the same author - I remember it making me laugh out loud and really enjoying everyone who deserved a happy ending getting one. And as a fat woman, I was really looking forward to rooting for some well-drawn characters of size making a go of their business of wedding dresses for plus-sized women. It ticked all of the boxes for a book I should enjoy for an escape.

But it felt like the author was ticking those boxes, too, like someone gave her a laundry list of cardboard plus-sized characters to include, but they didn't give her any credible emotions or meaningful situations for them. I kept waiting for any kind of meaningful character development or emotional resonance to register, and it just didn't. So disappointing.

I think the author meant well. She wanted this to be a very body image positive book, but managed to do the complete opposite. Several lead characters are plus size women, and she manages to mention their size constantly, as if that was their sole defining characteristic. Any time there was a mention of food, they were eating donuts or cake and washing it down with sweet tea. So stereotypical and ultimately belittling.

A really sweet book - romantic but not steamy. This easily could have turned into a series featuring each of the three best friends, but I actually loved that it didn't. I would, however, read a book the twin daughters.

I loved this book. The growth of the characters, the setting, everything. I loved how the main characters were a mix of bigger women and skinny women. To show ugliness is not on the outside, but on the inside. Great book.

A syrupy-sweet cozy romance with southern charm! Just a feel good book!

This author never fails to amaze me with her books.

I didn't know if I was going to get through this at first....the cliches are plentiful and all the Southern/Texas stereotypes are present. I kept reading though, and enjoyed it generally, once I got into it. It was also predictable and everyone's storylines got tied up with a perfectly packaged bow....so all in all, a great quarantine read.
