This book is good but not the best thing ever. I found there to be a lot of repetition when it came to Ben and Elsies relationship and Elsies self pity (which is pointed out in the book but is not changed until much later.) The drama between Elsie and Susan was what got me to want to read the book and it just was not as spectacular as I was expecting. The two essentially made up at the start of the Part 2 and it felt like the rest was a healing story and less of how to intermingle a mother-in-law and daughter-in-law into their lives when they didn't even know each other existed. Ben and Elsie's relationship felt very bare bones and unnatural. I understand that is a critical point of the story, but Elsie being described as not promiscuous and deciding to get eloped in her first serious relationship is unrealistic.

Insta-love is very hard to prove real and it just seems very odd how heartbroken she is over, indeed, a 6 month relationship. That is not to say she shouldn't have been heartbroken, not by any means, but constantly fighting with her mother-in-law knowing she is the odd one out is royally selfish. Moreover, the drama with Ana was fine, but again, paints Elsie as a victim when she said cruel things as well. I would've liked to see more of the unruly facets of grief and the relationship between Elsie and Susan more.

That being said, the writing was good if not boring in parts. I like the concept of the plot and just would've liked it to be better developed and in a better way that didn't make everything seem so...fake?

woof. this was a rough one. i never thought i’d be saying that about a TJR book, but strange things happen every day. for a debut novel, it has chops. it’s heart wrenching, its human, its a lot of what i love about her books. but man was it a struggle to get through. the writing is SO choppy. in the points of the book where elsie is in the throes of her grief, i get it being a stylistic choice. but in the moments where she is having the time of her life with ben, the flow that comes with romance is entirely nonexistent. it feels like all the sentences have been cut off right before they’re about to get really good. i’m very glad to see that her writing has improved drastically since her first book!
