This book wasn't terrible, but I really wanted to like it more than I did, especially because I love the cover art and folklore.
It was written like a YA novel, which is okay, but the MC didn't work for me. His descriptions of how he feels about his fated one were overdone and his actions didn't always line up with his motivations. Also, Jyn kept gatekeeping his own history for no reason except "it's painful" (and I suppose so the author could "suspend the mystery" for the reader, even though it was obvious), and it only created more problems for them. The ending made me go, "Huh. Weird but okay." So take that as you will.

It’s a lovely story, though I feel like Jyn’s coldness dragged on much too long. About midway through, a longer section featuring happy slice of life between the two before the finale would have increased the emotional impact. It felt like Jyn barely had time to open up.
i liked sai bc he was just a normal dude and then he like. went sicko mode and crushed a crow to death with his bare hands? or something. and that was my first inkling of like… ohh…. ok he’s just gonna be some powerful dude. which rlly bugged me bc i was happy about the fact that it had kinda switched what normally happens? like it’s always some powerful ancient mythical dude and then just like. a girl. so i wanted to read abt some powerful ancient mythical lady and the normal dude she likes but that didn’t pull thru for me.
also i was rlly expecting to see their son reborn in the epilogue or something. not even to them! just like… an acknowledgment that he’s started another life. i would’ve enjoyed that, because he’s like the catalyst for so much of what happens. like róng killed him and prevented him from being able to pass on, then sai dies trying to go see what’s up with his son, forcing him into his cycle of reincarnation, and jyn is forced to live knowing her son is stuck being unable to reincarnate and her lover is stuck in an almost endless cycle of reincarnation. just some acknowledgement that his soul is finally free from róng and that he’s passed on would’ve been nice.
also, finally: stop giving honey to babies!!! omg. #botulism

Beautifully written and so heartfelt. There was just the right mix of adventure and character development. I was getting a little concerned near the end that we wouldn’t get an HEA, but that made it’s coming all the sweeter.
