I determined that I needed to read this after witnessing the apartheid happening in Palestine. I needed to understand more of the history of apartheid.

I’m so glad I read this because now I have more knowledge and also more questions. Mandela was and still is an excellent teacher through his words.

First, it’s a damn shame I never learned about any of this in school and it was happening when I was a child. I’m generally concerned about lionizing political figures because humans are complicated and we miss a lot of the complexity when we turn them into saints (see Mother Teresa, Gandhi, Abraham Lincoln). However, this book was a great insight into the motivating forces behind the ANC and anti-apartheid forces in South Africa as well as the country’s history. Worth a read.

I love this man

I don't know where to begin with this review. This is an amazing book written by an amazing human being. It takes you all the way from his days growing up in a village in the bush all the way through the establishment and formation of a unified government during the dismantling of apartheid.

The amazing thing about this book is that Mandiba tells his life story but is completely humble throughout and always does his best to make it about others (his family, his comrades, his enemies and his people).

I also learned a little bit about 20th century South African history. What a truly difficult and amazing place. I definitely wonder where the struggle for unification is in modern day, but Mandiba and all his ANC comrades did the absolute best they could to set South Africa up for success in future generations.

In a time when heroes and role models are being sought in all the wrong places (sports, music, movies), this man was a true role model that everyone could try to emulate.

When I think of Mandiba these words come to mind: Love, Humility, Faith, Strength, Endurance, Patience, and Perseverance!!!!

This book is well worth the effort, and after the first 5 or so chapters it becomes very fast paced and impossible to put down!

Inspiring; better than your average autobiography.

A really earnestly well-written biography from one of the most interesting political figures of the 20th Century. What a life he lead!
