Book #17 Read in 2015
By Book or By Crook by Eva Gates
This is the first book in a new cozy mystery series. I knew I would love it since it's set in a library, has Jane Austen's books at its center and there is a library cat named Charles after Charles Dickens. I was not disappointed. This book had good twists and turns which kept me guessing the killer's identity to the very end. The library staff characters were interesting and engaging. The setting of both the library (in a lighthouse) and the town (small, beach town) were great to read about and visit. I enjoyed this book a lot and will read book #2, out in September. I borrowed this book from my public library.

This book pretty well illustrates the stagnation of library science as a field, being more concerned with elitist gate-keeping than fostering diversity and engaging the communities it is meant to be serving. The author didn't intend that, of course, but it definitely reads better as a scathing critique than a mystery.

I really enjoyed this cozy mystery and the interesting characters. I definitely want to listen to more of this series (audiobook).
yay for a fun new series (to me)! The characters are interesting and the setting is beautiful. I'm looking forward to the love triangle and the next mystery.
I only read (well, listened to) this because it’s set in a library in a lighthouse. The book wasn’t very good but god do I want to work/live there.
This is a solid cozy mystery, and I liked the setting of a lighthouse on the NC coast. There was a lot more library talk than I expected, too (which is a good thing). I enjoyed reading the snippets about librarians busting their butts to put on a special exhibition and workshop. I could do without the love triangle, but at least the book has two likeable love interests in addition to a yoga-doing head librarian I'd be friends with :)

Not a particularly strong start to a series, but I will probably read the next one.
It wasn't that I hated the MC, but she has serious family issues. It made her annoying, and I wasn't really rooting for her at any point. To keep her job, to find love, to stay in town. I just didn't like her enough to care. Plus the mystery was loosely held together and I didn't believe the motive for the cartoonish villain.
But...like I said, I'll probably read book 2 someday, because I just can't stay away from cozy mysteries. 2 stars. Well, 2.5 stars because of Charlie.
