Paen, a Dark One who leads a nice life with his three Moravian brothers and their parents in Scotland. Sam is a mutt, half human half sun-elf, who got kicked out of the academy of diviners and now opens her own private detective agency with her cousin Clare, a fairy in denial.
Paen gets a visit by an alaster a demon type who calls in a debt of his father and gives him 5 days to find a certain statue or his mother will loose her soul. Paen and his brother Finn then employ Sam as a private investigator and things spiral out of control quickly.

Paen and Sam both lead nice lives, he uses his time to research the origins of the Moravian Dark Ones and she uses her skills of finding things to build up her own agency. Paen doesn't want a Beloved, thinking he is happy without a woman at his side and without being saved. Sam has this little issue with uncontrolled astral projections when she gets aroused and their relationship starts off as a simple sexual relationship. Things do not stay simple because of a situation with a demon trying to kill them, repeatedly, and his mother's soul to be saved and stuff.

I've loved all of Katie Macalister's Dark Ones books. This one was good, but all the losing and gaining of souls, then the happy ending, were a little less good than usual. I'd still read it again, and more of the books she's written, too.

Sprecherin: Vera Teltz
Der Sprecherin würde ich 5 Sterne geben.
Verlag: Audible Studios

Another good addition to the series. Entertaining, not life changing. I liked the characters well enough, it had a good plot (with a few differences than the previous installments). A nice distraction.

I really enjoyed this book. I was a little irritated with Paen, what with his refusing to believe that he needed her after she had completed the steps. Clare was hilarious. Sam was great; independent and determined. I had trouble at the end keeping Casper and Pilar separated when they were using their real names instead of the names they had used all book. However, I was pleased when Pilar made up for trying to kill them by getting Sam her soul back, and that his destruction of the monkey did not actually cost Paen's mother her soul. I am very much looking forward to reading the next one.

I might as well say this to begin with: I wasn't really all that into the first book in this series. I don't really know what it was, but something just didn't campture me. Perhaps it was the whole human-fell-in-lov-with-human-and-not-vampire that didn't sit good with me. But that is all water under the bridge now that I've read the three next book in the Dark Ones series.

In this book, the fourth, a brooding, soulless Dark One, Paen, believes he needs no one. No woman and no saviour. But he is soon forced to contact a half elvish woman, Samantha, to help him find a statue of a monkey in order to save his mother's soul. It shouldn't be hard to do since elves have a knack for findng lost things, but soon it turns out that there's more to it than just finding a statue. Powerful creatures intevene with their search. And when Sam decides to save Paen even though he has no wish of being saved things look worse than ever.

I am in love with this book and off to get the fifth. And even all the rest! Toodles!

Boring, stupid, full of clichés. Characters were superficial and bland...

I'll always love Paen. He's a bit of a jerk in the middle of the book - Wahh wahh wahh I don't want to be redeemed, I'm fine being a broody, grumpy vampire, wahh. But he pretty quickly gets his head out of his a$$ and realizes Sam is worth everything.

I remember, when I first read this years ago, being a little confused but who was who, and what was what - especially since some of the immortal beings encountered are using multiple names for different personalities. But reading this now, I thought it went smoother, since I know what being is going by what name, yadda yadda yadda.

I don't think Paen is my favorite of the Dark Ones. But he's definitely up there.

Also das mit den chinesischen Göttern war mir dann doch ein bisschen zu absurd. Aber sonst...ganz nett.
